On the other hand, you can open the image in Photoshop Elements and then send it to Photoshop to use its full set of editing tools.

The most obvious downside to using Photoshop Elements as a standalone program is that you can’t use all the features that come with the Photoshop software collection. For example, you can’t work with the color panels found in Photoshop or open a vector image in Photoshop Elements.

## Getting Started with Photoshop Elements

Photoshop Elements is available in both a version for Windows and a version for Macs.

Before You Begin

Before you begin, you’ll need to download Photoshop Elements. You can download it here. You can also download GIMP, an alternative to Photoshop Elements, here.

Since neither Photoshop nor Photoshop Elements are open source software, you’ll need an appropriate license. You can download a free trial version of Photoshop Elements here. You can download a free version of GIMP here.

Installing Adobe Photoshop Elements and GIMP

To install Adobe Photoshop Elements and GIMP on Ubuntu follow these steps:

Install Adobe Photoshop Elements

The first thing to do is to download Adobe Photoshop Elements for Linux. You can download it here.

When the download finishes, you’ll find a file named Adobe Photoshop Elements 18.1.0.x86_64.tar.gz. We’re going to extract this file, so open a terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T and navigate to the directory that contains the file:

$ cd Adobe Photoshop Elements 18.1.0.x86_64.tar.gz

Once you’ve navigated to the directory where the file is located, you can extract the contents of the file:

$ tar xvf Adobe Photoshop Elements 18.1.0.x86_64.tar.gz

This should extract the contents of the file into the current directory. We’re not done yet! To install the software, we must configure it. We can do this with the following command:

$./install

The program will now start installing the software. You might see a warning message about the default configuration. Click the ‘Dismiss’ button on this message and click ‘Install’.

Once the installation completes, you can launch Photoshop Elements by going to ‘Applications’ and searching for ‘Photoshop Elements’. You can also start it by clicking on the ‘Photoshop Elements’ icon which you can find in the menu bar. The program might ask you to create a new image. Click ‘Create’ and set the resolution, sample size and image size. You don’t need to change any of these settings since we’re going to create a new image.

Designer focuses on the man who walked on the moon

For more than a decade, Ryan Sikorski has been studying the life and work of astronaut Neil Armstrong. In the recent summer issue of Homelife, Sikorski described what led him to focus on Armstrong, why he thought he was such an important historical figure, and how Armstrong’s friendship with fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin inspired his design work.

Working in the world of animation, the digital sculptor has had to focus on different media in different ways.

“At the beginning I made a lot of small digital sculptures,” he said. “It just started out as a hobby, and then it became this thing I really enjoyed. Instead of making 4-D design, I was making 3-D design. And it was good. I was doing something interesting. I was just experimenting.”

With each project, Sikorski said, he tries to take what he’s learned from the previous project and “build the next one on that foundation.”

After starting his career as an animator, he went through a period where he earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture. But that was more than a decade ago and he’s been in the field full-time since then.

He began working in animation with well-known companies like Disney and Industrial Light & Magic. He also worked at Perception, doing visualization projects that used computer graphics to help storytellers understand and convey emotions, ideas and content to audiences.

After many years in the field, he came to see animation as a very personal profession.

“Being an artist, I’m always looking for the chance to express something I’m passionate about, something that I’m into,” he said. “But I don’t want to make a movie just to make a movie. I’m motivated by things in life. Things that are personally meaningful to me.”

Sikorski said he became interested in Armstrong and Aldrin’s lives while studying the era of the moon landings as part of his master’s degree in aerospace engineering at Arizona State University.

“For me, it was kind of a personal journey trying to understand who this man was and what he was like,” he said. “How he lived his life. I also did a lot of reading about him.”

Sikorski said he became particularly interested in the events surrounding Armstrong’s resignation from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration after years of being unfairly maligned
