Start by creating a new document, which works best if you create one that is 1,200 x 1,200 pixels. Create a file with a layer name that is similar to the image’s name and make sure the document background is white. Once the new document has been created, you’ll load a photograph into it.

You’ll want to make sure to import the image as a flattened file rather than a JPG file as JPGs do not support layers. You can flatten the image by clicking the flatten button that appears when you select an image (shown below).

The image needs to be flattened for one of Photoshop’s layer features—click the “lock as a Smart Object” button on the Layers panel and make sure that the Layers panel is checked.

Next, you’ll need to convert the image to black and white. To do so, you’ll need to select the Hue/Saturation command that is located next to the channel control on your keyboard. You can see an example of the Hue/Saturation command options in the image below.

Next you’ll adjust the color balance.

You can use the Hue/Saturation command to adjust the Saturation slider. Adjusting the Saturation will determine how much or how little the image looks like it was taken in color. The color balance tool’s ‘temperature’ can be adjusted by using the temperature sliders, located near the Saturation slider, to adjust both the warmth and coolness (or color temperature) in the image.

After the color balance is adjusted, you’ll use the Curves tool to bring out areas of the image that were not as bright or as dark as the other parts.

You’ll use the Curves tool. Use the mouse pointer to drag the slider to adjust the brightness values. For example, you can drag the middle or light blue part of the slider (shown below) to the left. This will decrease the brightness of the image, whereas dragging the gray area in the middle will increase the brightness, making the image brighter.

Once you have brought the brightness in your image to a suitable level, the image will begin to look more like a photograph.

To achieve this, use the Levels tool.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Responding to the “increased number of stowaways” seen in recent years, Taiwan has developed a laser beam technology that is being tested to protect the nation’s maritime boundaries.

Reportedly on Friday, the Ministry of National Defense announced that the first laser beam test was conducted successfully in a military theater.

The laser beam was used to test whether or not it was possible for the Republic of China Navy’s patrol aircraft to launch a laser beam to “locate and intercept the stowaways,” according to The Apple Daily.

The paper reported the ministry was testing the development of the laser beam technology, which is capable of inflicting severe damage to the ship of an attacker. According to the ministry, the beam is only visible to the naked eye at high powers, but is invisible to the naked eye at low powers, which makes it ideal for maritime protection.

The ROC Ministry of National Defense provided the following explanation of how the laser beam works, reported UDN:

The surface-to-air (SA) laser system uses an optical fiber to transmit a laser beam with a wavelength of 1064 nanometer, that can be recognized by the naked eye only at high power. At high power, the beam is visible to the naked eye and is easy to see for even a small plane.
